ƽ Professors Receive National Mathematics Award
ƽ professors Marc Chamberland and Jeff Blanchard have been named the 2025 recipients of the from the (MAA), recognizing their outstanding exposition in a mathematics article.
Their award-winning article, “Salvaging College Registrations During COVID-19 via Integer Programming,” was published in Mathematics Magazine in 2024. The piece explores how Blanchard and Chamberland helped ƽ adapt its course registration process during the pandemic, offering a compelling case study in applying integer programming to solve a real-world problem. In addition to sharing the innovative solutions implemented at ƽ, the article provides an accessible introduction to integer programming and highlights the importance of flexibility in mathematical modeling.
“It is a wonderful surprise to be recognized with the MAA’s Allendoerfer Award,” said Blanchard, professor of mathematics. “The story of this project starts with a global tragedy, a meeting many feet apart in my backyard, an incredible amount of work, and a persistence that paid off with this incredible recognition.”
“It is a wonderful honor to receive the Carl B. Allendoerfer Award,” added Chamberland. “The MAA’s journals, which explicitly value not only solid content but also engaging, well-organized exposition, have long held my admiration. The mathematical community is well-served by these journals. It’s humbling to be added to the list of accomplished communicators.”
The Carl B. Allendoerfer Award is presented annually by the MAA to authors of articles of expository excellence published in Mathematics Magazine. Named in honor of the distinguished mathematician and educator Carl B. Allendoerfer, the award celebrates work that makes complex mathematics accessible and engaging for a broad audience.
